  Administration - Sustainability

Sustainability is a concept that is being discussed increasingly across Oregon and around the world. At its most basic level, sustainability means "meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs."  Sustainable communities use their resources to seek a better quality of life for their residents while maintaining nature’s ability to function over time.

The Sustainable Practices Program (SPP) is an effort by the Park District to start on the road to sustainability. Its purpose is to enable Park District staff to achieve greater efficiency while conserving energy, water and other materials.

In support of this effort, we have implemented a district-wide recycling program.  For example, we have  phased out pressure-treated sign posts and replaced them with longer-lived recycled plastic posts.  We have also developed a maintenance management plan for Greenway Park and used alternative paving materials in parking areas or trails to reduce storm water runoff.
