Lilly K. Johnson Woods Natural Area

Restoration work at Lilly K. Johnson Woods is ongoing.  Contractors continue to eradicate target weeds and replace with native species to improve wildlife habitat.  

Project Summary & Public Benefits

Several land acquisitions, made possible through funds from the 2008 THPRD bond measure and from a Metro Nature in Neighborhoods grant, increased the size of Lilly K. Johnson Woods Natural Area to 9.76 acres.  Bond measure funds have paid for site stabilization, including removal of deteriorated structures, installation of 500 feet of fencing, and weed management followed by installation of native shrubs and trees throughout the natural areas.

The upland natural areas are dominated by mature Douglas fir forests with an understory of Oregon grape and salal.  A tributary of South Johnson Creek flows eastward through a wetland forest dominated by Oregon ash and Oregon white oak with a dense understory of twinberry and slough sedge.  The goal of the habitat restoration work is to maintain and improve the existing natural areas for the benefit of wildlife and water quality.  An expansion of the existing soft-surface trail system in the original parcel is expected to connect to neighborhoods to the west.

Target weed management species within these habitats include English ivy, English holly and Himalayan blackberry.  Twice annual weed treatments will continue through 2018 by contractors skilled in natural area habitat restoration.
