Southern Italy and Sicily

Join the Stuhr Center for this amazing trip to Italy. Glorious art, classic Greek and Roman antiquities and ruins, centuries-old hilltop villages, fine wine, and great Italian food are all part of this 12-day journey exploring both the well-known and hidden treasures of Southern Italy and Sicily.
Following a two-night stay in Rome, see the 2,000-year-old city of Pompeii that was frozen in time by a volcanic eruption. Your vacation highlights include southern Italy's breathtaking Amalfi Coast, Naples, Sorrento, the Calabria region, the gardens of Taormina, Mt. Etna Volcano National Park, Agrigento, and the Valley of the Temples.
Your journey ends in Palermo, with its lovely squares and an eclectic mix of architectural styles. Sip Sicily's famous sweet, dark wine during a wine-tasting and tour of a local Marsala winery. Amid soft, cooling ocean breezes and almond trees, explore the ruins of ancient temples dedicated to Zeus and other mythological Greek gods and goddesses in the Valley of the Temples in the coastal city of Agrigento, one of the most important archeological sites in the world. Spain's Classics (Featuring Lisbon, Portugal)
March 26 - April 7, 2009
Price includes round trip air from Portland (OR) International Airport, air taxes and fees/surcharges of $370 (subject to increase until paid in full), hotel transfers. Not included in price is cancellation/waiver insurance.
Arrive in Lisbon, Portugal, where quaint farming villages, cork and olive tree plantations dot the landscape. We'll enjoy this vibrant capital city and end our evening with a welcome dinner. Our next day, we will tour the Moorish Alfama Quarter, Jeronimo's Monastery, and Tower of Belem. We'll top off the day with dinner including local cuisine, wines and Fado music.
On day four, our tour will encompass the City of Fatima, the Batalha Monastery and quaint towns of Nazare and Obidos. This day we head through the countryside of Portugal and Spain to Madrid, the capital city of Spain. We will tour this historic town visiting the Prado Museum, then in the afternoon we will travel to Toledo the capital of "medieval Spain until 1560. We will enjoy the magnificent Gothic cathedral and 14th century synagogue of El Transito with a stop at the Church of Santo Tome to view El Greco's masterpiece painting, The Burial of Count Orgaz. Our next day will include the Moorish city of Cordoba with our evening ending in Seville, considered Spain's "cultural capital."
In Seville, we will see Columbus' tomb, the ornate cathedral and Giralda Bell Tower. A walking tour of the quaint old Danta Cruz quarter will feature bright flowers, white washed buildings and winding streets. A local flamenco dancer will entertain us during our lunch in Tapas. This will warm you up for that evening's authentic flamenco show, where you'll have reserved seating.
Next we will travel along the peaceful Sierra Nevade to Granada for a tour of the world famous Alhambra. In Granada, we will view the rolling hills dotted in olive groves enroute to the Mediterranean coast to the city of Valencia. Valencia is a treasure trove of Roman and Arabic architecture, surrounded by citrus groves and known for its vibrant nightlife. We will have a chance to tour Valencia to view the highlights of this historic city, which include the ornate 14th century Serranos Tower and imposing 15th century Quart Tower.
From Valencia we will end our tour with two nights in Barcelona. Barcelona one of the most vibrant and lively cities in Spain.Our tour showcases Las Ramblas Blvd, the most famous in Barcelona. It is dotted with bird and flower staffs. We'll also see Columbus Monument, Parc Montjic, Antonio Gaudi's "La Sagrada Familia", Parc Guell and the unconventional Casa Mila building. On our last evening we will gather for a farewell dinner before we return home the next day.
