Greenway Park

The Greenway Habitat Enhancement Project (GHEP) involves restoration of 20 acres of turf and degraded riparian habitat along salmon-bearing Fanno Creek in Greenway Park.  The project is a coordinated effort between THPRD staff, Clean Water Services, community members, school groups, and nonprofit agencies.  The project is unique in that it will return many turfed areas back into wetlands or forests.  GHEP will increase community involvement in and awareness of the value of our local wetland and riparian vegetation, as well as expanding wildlife habitat and imroving water quality.  This will be accomplished through on-the-ground restoration, educational signs, and community-based site monitoring.  A project plan has been created.  Please click on the link to see a map and details.

Many years ago, farmers straightened Fanno Creek in Greenway Park to create larger fields. Although this made it easier to farm, it also caused more erosion that led to unstable creek banks. This summer, contractors re-routed the creek to improve the health of the stream and surrounding habitats, returning the it to a more natural configuration.    Logs were installed along the banks to trap sediment and to provide fish habitat. The stream banks will be replanted in the coming winter. Stop by sometime to see water flowing in the new channel.
