Park Watch is a community stewardship and outreach program that provides a critical link between the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District and park visitors. Park Watch volunteers provide a positive presence in the park, helping monitor the park for safety and visitor rule compliance. Volunteers are encouraged to work together in pairs and respond to prevent damaging behavior by contacting violators tactfully. Volunteers work cooperatively with the police and district Security Operations for the benefit of the Park District community. As a secondary function, volunteers act as a park information providers, assisting park visitors with routine inquiries. Park Watch volunteers work to create a sense of stewardship among park users, inspiring them to follow park policies and protect fragile wildlife habitats.

THPRD actively manages district properties with the safety and security of patrons in mind.  We have bike and truck patrols, Park Patrol, monitoring parks throughout the district year-round during both daylight and evening hours.  Park Watch volunteers complement this program, acting as the "eyes and ears" for the Park Patrol staff and for the community.  Please visit our Risk and Safety web page for information on our policies and safety programs.

The district has three active Park Watch programs: Commonwealth Lake/Foothills Park, Greenway/Fanno Creek Park, and Tualatin Hills Nature Park.  Additionally, a fourth Park Watch program is starting in the Sexton Mountain Park region.

Greenway Park Watch volunteers Roger and Julie Jensen became involved after they decided the park needed to be useful for all, crime-free and a safe recreation area. "We use the park for biking, jogging, walking the dog and as a commute route. The park is a wonderful place and all of us need to take good care of it."                       Greenway Park Watch volunteers Vance and Carolyn Boeltz discovered problems with motorized vehicles, parties, homeless camps and dogs off leash. "We now watch for vandalism to the park and playground equipment, pick up litter and enjoy using the park for biking, walking and trail access to the adjacent businesses. The park is a great place and we intend to enjoy it for a long time."
District patrons involved in these programs periodically provide short training sessions for new volunteers interesting in getting involved. Additionally, the district provides training for volunteers wanting to develop their own programs at other parks. For more information about joining one of the existing Park Watch programs, or to form your own Park Watch program, please contact our administration office at 503/645-6433.
