Scout Projects
The Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District partners with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America each year through a number of volunteer opportunities, including Eagle Scout and Gold Award projects, as well as stewardship projects for groups of Scouts.
Eagle Scout/Gold Award Projects
Construction projects
- Install pervious pavers at specified trail intersections throughout Greenway Park. This addition will improve the usability and appearance of our trails.
- Catch, identify and preserve 50 species of local insects in epoxy cubes. This collection will be used for educational purposes at the Nature Park Interpretive Center.
Restoration projects - Invasive plant removal accompanied by planting natives trees and shrubs throughout the Park District.
- Vale Park - Remove Himalayan blackberry and non-native trees from the riparian corridor of a tributary of Beaverton's South Johnson Creek and follow up by planting native trees and shrubs. Due to the seasonality of native plant stock, the planting would have to take place in October - December (potted plants) or February - March (bare root plants).
- Granada Park - Remove a combination of Himalayan blackberry, English ivy and non-native trees from the natural areas of this upland forest. The debris removed throughout the project can also be used to block some of the excessive trails that run through the park. Invasive plant removal would be followed up by a native planting in Feburary - March.
Scouting Group Projects
Guy Miller Tree Plant - Register to plant native trees and shrubs at: http://www.thprd.org/nature/weekendprojects.cfm. Native planting projects with THPRD are scheduled between Oct. 15 and March 15 each year.
Trail maintenance - This could include resurfacing trails with gravel, trimming vegetation along trails, installation of trail liners and/or installation of culverts where needed.
Adopt-A-Park/Plot - If your scout group would like to be involved in a long-term stewardship project at a park, this is the program for you! This program is adaptable to your goals in the park. Activities could include: stream or litter clean-up, non-native vegetation management, trail maintenance, native plant installation, restoration site monitoring, wildlife surveys, etc.
