Schiffler Park reopens to public following extensive redevelopment
January 18, 2013
The newly redeveloped Evelyn M. Schiffler Memorial Park in central Beaverton (typically accessed via Erickson, Bonnie Brae, or Berthold Streets) is once again open to the public.
The 10-acre site in central Beaverton has been closed for several months while undergoing a major makeover. It now features 252 feet of boardwalk and a two-acre wetland area with restored habitat and overlooks for better views. Other amenities include play equipment with natural surfaces and textures, two picnic shelters, community gardens, athletic areas, a basketball court, and pathways.
Yet another major highlight is a skate "spot." It's THPRD's first skating facility outside of its main complex at 158th and Walker Road.
The reopening of Schiffler marks completion of the first community park redevelopment funded by THPRD's 2008 voter-approved bond measure. Community parks are generally 10-25 acres, whereas neighborhood parks are 2-5 acres.
No grand opening or dedication is scheduled today or in the short term, but a celebration will occur this spring or summer. For now, barriers will be removed and users will be free to take advantage of the park's amenities. THPRD parks are open dawn to dusk.
Formed in 1955, THPRD is the largest special park district in Oregon, spanning about 50 square miles and serving more than 220,000 residents in the greater Beaverton area. The district provides year-round recreational opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. Offerings include a wide variety of classes, 90 park sites with active recreational amenities, 60 miles of trails, eight swim centers, six recreation centers, and 1,400 acres of natural areas.
