Eighth annual Party in the Park takes over HMT campus on July 27
July 05, 2013
Party in the Park, the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District's largest community event of the year, returns for its eighth run on Saturday, July 27, at the Howard M. Terpenning Recreation Complex, 158th and Walker Road, Beaverton.
The day-long affair – featuring the Beaverton International Celebration, The Classic at T-Hills car show and the Family Triathlon – will transform the district’s main campus into a carnival of activities for people of all ages.
Admission is free for this day of entertainment and recreation, which includes drop-in sports, swimming, food, music, exhibitions and other family-friendly activities.
“This family-oriented, active, outdoor event really showcases so many of the elements that make our district successful. It connects people with their families, friends and community,” said THPRD General Manager Doug Menke.
Most of the day’s events take place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., except The Classic at T-Hills (8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.) and Family Triathlon (9 a.m. start). There is a small exhibitor fee for The Classic and participant fee for the Family Triathlon, but viewing is free.
Party in the Park/Beaveron International Celebration event schedule
The Beaverton International Celebration has become a major attraction of Party in the Park since its debut in 2011. Coordinated by the City of Beaverton, the Celebration pays tribute to the Beaverton area's diverse population. This year’s show will include music, dance, arts and crafts exhibits, food, costumes, and information representing numerous ethnic communities. Another feature will be a “kids and culture” interactive area with a broad range of activities for children and families.
The Classic at T-Hills will display vintage automobiles, trucks and motorcycles on grass fields behind the Tualatin Hills Athletic Center. Musical entertainment will be provided by The Sol Mars (10 a.m. - noon) and The Shifterz (1-3 p.m.)
The Family Triathlon has been a staple of Party in the Park since 2007. Children and parents participate together in a 50-yard swim, two-mile bike ride, and 1/3-mile run.

At noon, the Beaverton Police Department will unleash its K-9 Unit. The police dogs, with their speed, power, agility and intelligence, are always a crowd favorite.
A wide array of free and fun activities awaits children after 11 a.m., including giant inflatable play structures, climbing walls, arts and crafts, and face painting. THPRD’s Rec Mobile and Nature Mobile will provide supervised sports and arts programs, games and environmental education.
Free drop-in sports activities are scheduled throughout the day, including basketball, volleyball, badminton, pickleball and table tennis at the Athletic Center and swimming at the Tualatin Hills Aquatic Center (1:30-3:30 p.m. and 4-6 p.m.), The schedule also includes an outdoor tennis clinic and bocce demonstration.
Food and beverages will be available for purchase from a variety of local vendors.
THPRD will run a shuttle between the complex and the Merlo Road/SW 158th MAX light rail station. The complex is served by bus routes 59 and 67, and bicycle racks are available. Campus parking is free but limited on the 92-acre HMT Complex.
