Beaverton women headed to USTA Nationals after win at Sunriver
July 17, 2014
A Tualatin Hills women's tennis team from Beaverton has qualified for the United States Tennis Association's National Championships for players 55 and over in the 6.0 division after winning the USTA's Pacific Northwest Sectional Championships at Sunriver in late June.
All 12 members of the team live in the Beaverton area. They prevailed over three Washington teams (from Spokane, the Tri-Cities and Kirkland) and an Oregon team from Salem in the 6.0 division (doubles play with each player having a 3.0 tennis rating).
The Tualatin Hills group will now represent the Pacific Northwest region Oct. 31-Nov. 2 in Surprise, Ariz., a suburb of Phoenix.
"Winning sectionals and making it to the national tournament is a huge achievement for us," said team captain Patricia Landers Gee, a part-time employee of the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District. "We want to thank the staff at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center for their support of USTA league tennis and for the great instruction and coaching we have received over the years."
Team members in addition to Landers Gee are Priscilla Connelly, Suzanne Eberle, Jan Kirkpatrick, Carol Kviz, Sandi Martes, Cynthia Kraemer, Amy Moore, Alice Sheofsky, Wendy Vaughn, Marge Halbach and Minhang Tran.
"Our team has more than 150 years of combined tennis experience," Landers Gee said.
The women's journey to nationals began last fall when they won their division of a
USTA league that competes at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center. They then defeated teams from the West Hills and Mountain Park Racquet Clubs in area playoffs to earn a spot in the sectional championships.
