Early 2010 bond projects under way

01/12/2010

Neither rain, sleet nor snow are keeping the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District from diving into several bond measure projects this winter.

Seven projects are currently under way with more scheduled to get rolling during the spring and summer of 2010. For a full list of bond measure efforts, go to www.thprd.org/bondprojects/schedule.cfm.

Here’s a quick look at the current projects:

Tualatin Hills Athletic Center – upgraded ventilation system: An upgraded ventilation system is being installed and the control system is being upgraded at the Athletic Center. The new system will improve air quality and patron comfort and safety, particularly during the hot summer months.

Construction began in late November. The Athletic Center will remain open during construction, although selected basketball courts and the running track will require temporary closures to coincide with overhead pipe installations. The work at the facility should wrap up in April. The project budget is $500,000. The contractor is Collins Mechanical Inc.

Aloha Swim Center – ADA/family dressing rooms: The new changing room will accommodate persons with disabilities as well as families. The lobby casework will also be updated to accommodate an ADA access-way from the new changing room to the pool. Construction began on Dec. 21, 2009. The Aloha Aquatic Center will be closed starting for lobby remodel beginning Dec. 21, 2009, and will re-open on Jan. 11, 2010.

The ADA/family dressing room will be completed by mid-February. The pool will remain open while work on the dressing room is being completed. The budget for the project is $120,000. The contractor is Scott Edwards Architecture.

George W. Otten Park – swing set installation: George W. Otten Park will be receiving a new swing set. The new equipment will be added near the existing play area. Budget permitting, additional improvements such as concrete curbing for containment of the wood fiber safety surfacing may be included.

Installation is scheduled to begin in February 2010 and completed in April or May of 2010. The budget is $40,000.

Murrayhill Powerline Park – play equipment installation: Murrayhill Powerline Park has received approximately $30,000 in new play equipment and opened in January 2010. Construction got under way on Nov. 9, 2009. The park was closed for approximately eight weeks. The budget for the project was $81,000.

Terra Linda Park – play equipment installation: Terra Linda Park is receiving approximately $30,000 in new play equipment. Construction will begin in February 2010. The park will be closed for approximately eight weeks with an anticipated re-open date in April. Signs will be posted at the park detailing the closure. Project budget is $81,000.

Roxbury Park – irrigation system replacement: This project involves the conversion of a manual irrigation system to an automated central-control system. The new system will improve irrigation and conserve water at Roxbury Park. Construction began the last week of November and will wrap up sometime this winter. The area being worked on will be open to the public during the spring. The contractor is Cedar Landscape Inc. The budget is $47,500.

Murrayhill Park – replanting natural areas: The Natural Resources Department is removing several acres of non-native blackberry shrubs under the power lines. The removed plants will be replaced with low-growing native shrubs to improve wildlife habitat. Work began in the summer of 2009 and will continue into the spring of 2011. The project budget is $58,700.
