Some openings still remain in popular THPRD classes and programs

Registration for THPRD's Winter/Spring 2010 classes and programs started Jan. 9, and although many have filled, a wide range of interesting opportunities are still available across the Park District.
To make a selection, you can view the Winter/Spring Activities Guide online at www.thprd.org. Register for classes online or by calling the facility where the class is scheduled.
Here are a few highlights:

Conestoga Recreation & Aquatic Center
The second session of swimming lessons at Conestoga gets under way Feb. 8 and Feb. 22. An ideal time to learn swimming skills is between the ages of 3 and 5. There are openings at every level for the second winter session and all spring sessions. Space is limited.
Conestoga also offers Playschool, a fun, recreational preschool program for ages 4-5. Choose one, two or more days, Monday through Friday, 8:45 to 11:15 a.m. or Monday through Thursday, 12:15 to 2:45 p.m. Information is on page 110 of the online activities guide.
Finally, try Imagination Yoga on Tuesdays at 10:45 a.m. (CO32101) or 5 p.m. (CO32100). Introduce your active child (ages 3-8) to the benefits of yoga as he or she builds strength, balance and concentration. Yoga mats are provided and parent participation is encouraged.

Cedar Hills Recreation Center
If you’re into cooking or karate, Cedar Hills has what you’re looking for.
Learn to cook allergy-free with a series of cooking classes that cover substitutions and being label wise. All food will be corn, dairy, soy and gluten-free. Sign up for one class or all three in the series. Cost is $31 for the first class on Feb. 24, which covers breakfast (CH35502). Treats on March 3 (CH35503) and holiday favorites on March 10 (CH35504) are $33 each.
Shorin-ryu karate classes for kids and adults have already started but run until mid-March and there are still openings. Shorin-ryu is a self-defense-oriented traditional Okinawan karate style. Students will learn basic blocks, punches, kicks and break-fall techniques.
Choose a Wednesday class from 4:45 to 5:45 p.m. for ages 6-10. Cost is $54 (CH32205). There is a Friday class from 3:15 to 4 pm. for ages 5-8 for $43 (CH32206). Finally, there is another Friday class from 5 to 6 p.m. for ages 7 to adult for $58 (CH32207).

Garden Home Recreation Center
Garden Home has openings in several sports-related classes and all three levels of its Irish dance program.
Children ages 4-6 can try out Soccer Stars, a fun-filled class where children learn to dribble, pass, shoot and more. Class began Jan. 26 and continues through March 9 from 1:30 to 2:15 p.m. on Tuesdays. Cost is $31. (GH32102)
The Irish Dance program is a unique program for ages 5-14. The classes combine soft-shoe and jig hard-shoe, with more advanced steps the higher the level. Irish Dance I (GH31207) is $83. Dance II (GH31206) Dance III (GH31208) are both $103.
Garden Home also offers a wide variety of sewing classes, for beginners who do not know how to operate a sewing machine through experienced seamstresses. See page 166 in the online activities guide for more information.

Community Schools Program
THPRD’s Community Schools Program is offering a new selection of art classes this spring called Brush n’ Fire. This is an inexpensive opportunity for you, and possibly a loved one, to create a memory, a gift or a piece of functional art. Paint Valentines vases, hearty soup bowls, or something for the March holidays.
The classes will take place at Five Oaks Middle School, Jacob Wismer Elementary School and Raleigh Hills Elementary. Tualatin Hills Athletic Center
The Tualatin Hills Athletic Center is offering a variety of spring break camps for youngsters.
In Sports Madness Camp, kids ages 7-12 will play sports, including basketball, soccer and volleyball, and participate in different games and activities throughout the week. The camp is March 22-26 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and costs $156. (AC37201)
Volleyball Camp provides basic volleyball skills, including serving, passing, spiking and offensive and defensive strategizing. The camp is March 24-25 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for ages 9-13. Cost is $75. (AC37202)
Advanced Volleyball Camp is designed for players with prior volleyball experience. Improve skills and techniques through drills and scrimmages. This camp is March 22-23 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for ages 12-17. Cost is $75. (AC37203)
Other classes available through the Athletic Center include art, a learning-to-succeed program, badminton, golf, a variety of youth sports and a Pee Wee fitness class for ages 4-6.

Tualatin Hills Nature Park Interpretive Center
and Cooper Mountain Nature House
The Interpretive Center and Cooper Mountain offer a broad range of preschool and home-school programs as well as day camps.
The Park District’s Nature Preschool program is among the most unique your child can engage in. Children will learn about bugs and birds, bunnies and deer, mice and wildflowers. These one-day, two-hour classes cost between $8 and $13. More information is available on pages 201-203 in the online activities guide.
Spring break opportunities are another big part of THPRD’s nature programs. Spend five days (March 22-26) exploring the waterways of our region with Wild and Raging Rivers for ages 7 to 11. Cost is $183. (NP37204)
Cooper Mountain offers a pair of one-day camps: Gone Nutty on March 24 examines Western gray squirrels and their important place in the ecosystem (CM47101). Time for Change on March 26 allows kids to explore Cooper Mountain searching for signs of spring (CM47102). Both camps are for ages 6-10 and cost $49.
Finally, THPRD provides Day Off Camps on scheduled school holidays. Children ages 7-11 can escape the classroom for a day of outdoor learning at the Tualatin Hills Nature Park or various outdoor settings throughout the region. Costs of the camps vary, from $49 to $65.

Elsie Stuhr Center
The Elsie Stuhr Center offers classes for adults 55 and better. A couple of interesting classes this term include Brain Fitness and Self Defense.
Brain Fitness offers mental exercise with music to make it fun. Participants work to improve short and long-term memory through imagination, visualization and musical instruments. This class started Jan. 21 but runs through March 18 on Mondays and Thursdays from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Cost is $64. (ES33601)
Self Defense is a practical class combining a mixture of martial arts disciplines. It is appropriate for all fitness levels. This class also started Jan. 21 but it runs through March 18 on Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:25 p.m. Cost is $33. (ES32636)
Specialized Recreation Program
The Specialized Recreation Program (activities for ages 13 and older with disabilities) is featuring a new class this spring called Careers in Art. Participants will explore their artistic potential by creating art through painting, clay and jewelry making.
This class is Tuesdays and Thursdays, March 4-27, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Stuhr Center. Cost is $82.
