THPRD's summer performances in the park in full swing

06/04/2010

Aaron Meyer, right, will perform Thursday, Aug. 12, at Carolwood Park.

The Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District will present its deepest and most diverse Summer Concerts & Theater in the Park lineup ever in 2010 with nine concerts and four plays.

All of the performances are free, which began Thursday, June 24, at Garden Home Park with a concert featuring the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies and their blend of ska, swing, jazz and jump blues.

The next concert will feature concert rock violinist Aaron Meyer on Thursday, Aug. 8, at Carolwood Park. Meyer is a classically trained violinist who has soloed with major international symphony orchestras and ballet companies. He blends world, contemporary progressive rock and classical genres.

All concerts will run from 6 to 8 p.m. and take place at unique park sites around the district. Fans are invited to bring their lawn chairs, blankets, picnic baskets and love for music. Food will be available for purchase.

THPRD’s Rec Mobile and Nature Mobile will also be in attendance with face painting and other activities for the kids, including the popular “Fun Jump” inflatable.

The curtain rose on the theater schedule on Saturday, June 26, with “Pericles, Prince of Tyre,” at Somerset Meadows Park. Other plays include “Murder at the Orient Express” and “The Comedy of Errors” (see schedule at end of this release for dates and times). Last year’s theater performances drew more than 1,000 people to three productions.

For the first time, THPRD hosted a bilingual children’s play. On Saturday, July 10, at Schiffler Park, “King Midas” was presented in partnership with the Central Beaverton Neighborhood Association Committee. It was performed in English and then again in Spanish (“El Rey Midas”) – all by the same actors.

The productions are part of Portland Actors Ensemble’s 2010 Shakespeare-in-the-Parks 40th anniversary season. For more information, go to www.portlandactors.org or call Kelly Burns at 503/887-3795.

The district provides year-round recreational and educational opportunities for people of all ages. Offerings include a wide variety of classes and more than 200 park sites, 60 miles of trails, eight swim centers, six recreation centers, and 1,300 acres of natural areas.
