Estimated Public Opening:
Habitat restoration has been completed in the 20-acre natural area of Commonwealth Lake Park. Contractors removed weed species such as Himalayan blackberry and English ivy, and re-planted with native species.
THPRD installed an additional 3,200 native trees and shrubs at Commonwealth Lake in February 2013. This included replanting in the area where a section of paved trail was relocated on the north side of the lake.
Project Summary & Public Benefits
The natural areas of Commonwealth Lake have been enhanced through removal of non-native plant species and replanting native shrubs and trees. These new plantings provide improved habitat for a variety of native wildlife. Logs were added to the north shore of the lake for turtles to bask upon. Wildlife observed at this site includes river otters, muskrats, beavers, bald eagles, and a variety of waterfowl.
