Fall native plant sale returns Saturday, Oct. 7
Get ready for fall and planting season with the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District’s 17th annual Fall Native Plant Sale. A wide variety of shrubs, ground covers, perennials and trees will be available for purchase.
The event will be held at the Tualatin Hills Nature Center, 15655 SW Millikan Way, Beaverton, on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 am to 2 pm. Admission is free.
According to Karen Munday, program coordinator at the Nature Center, landscaping with native plants helps improve our regional ecosystem in many ways.
“Our pollinators are in decline,” she said of the local bees, butterflies and hummingbirds vital to our ecosystem. “A backyard habitat rich in native plants provides the food and cover to help these animals thrive.”
Munday also pointed to the benefits of planting in the fall as compared to the spring season.
“The rainy season takes care of the watering so you end up with a more established plant with more growth,” she said. “These plants are also more drought-resistant than ornamentals, making them better equipped to survive our dry summers.”
The event is sponsored by Friends of the Tualatin Hills Nature Park, who purchase plants from local growers that specialize in native species. Proceeds from sales will go to park improvements and environmental education.
